As the winter session commenced on Monday, the Lok Sabha resonated with boisterous celebrations by BJP members, applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the party’s victory in the heartland states. The session witnessed choreographed slogans, with BJP lawmakers chanting phrases like “Ek hi guarantee, Modi ki guarantee (Only one guarantee, Modi’s guarantee)” and “Baar baar Modi, teesri baar Modi (Each time Modi, third time Modi).”
Prime Minister Modi, greeted with a display of orchestrated applause and chants, acknowledged the acclaim with folded hands. The jubilation continued for several minutes, capturing the party’s elation following Sunday’s electoral success.
Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, opposition MP Danish Ali raised concerns about the perceived insult to the sanctity of Parliament during the last special session. He carried placards highlighting the humiliation he experienced when BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri directed communal slurs at him, demanding action against Bidhuri. The incident, which occurred during the last special session, led to an expulsion recommendation from the Ethics Committee.
Danish Ali’s protest was met with disapproval from Speaker Om Birla, who reprimanded him for bringing placards into the House, citing a violation of parliamentary rules. The Speaker urged Ali to leave the House, emphasizing his commitment to prohibiting placards within the Parliament building. The session was adjourned until noon after repeated calls for Ali to depart.
Before the parliamentary proceedings, Prime Minister Modi addressed the media, advising the opposition not to express frustration over the assembly polls defeat within Parliament. He encouraged a positive approach, suggesting that the opposition learn from the defeat and engage constructively in discussions on bills during the session.
As the Lok Sabha convened, the contrasting dynamics of jubilation and opposition criticism set the tone for what promises to be a lively winter session.
