At the Global AI Conclave in Bengaluru, author Chris Miller of the book “Chip War” highlighted the significant role of Bengaluru’s robust chip design sector in positioning India as a key player in the global semiconductor industry. He emphasized that India’s tens of thousands of chip designers provide a strong foundation for the country’s ambitions in the semiconductor value chain.
During his speech at the conclave, Miller pointed out that success in the chip industry requires both a supportive capital market with venture capitalists willing to invest, and a substantial user base. India, which recently introduced a $10 billion subsidy program to attract semiconductor companies, is better positioned to excel in chip design, according to Miller. He noted the high value-addition in chip design compared to other aspects of the industry, like chip packaging, which may provide more employment but offers less value.
Miller underscored that the majority of value in the semiconductor industry remains in chip design, citing examples of leading companies that prioritize this aspect. His book, “Chip War,” released in October 2022, provides a comprehensive narrative of the ongoing global competition to dominate microchip technology, a crucial element in everything from consumer electronics to global finance.
